Hentai history

Hentai (変態) is a Japanese word used outside of Japan to refer to Japanese animation ("anime"), comic-book-style magazines ("manga"), and computer games with explicit sexual or pornographic artwork (see Japanese pornography).

Meaning of the word

In Japanese, the word hentai means "pervert/perversion" or "transformation". The English meaning is not used in Japan, where the word is never used to refer to "normal" sexual content or conduct. The terms 18-kin (18禁, literally "18-prohibited") meaning "prohibited to those not yet 18 years old", and seijin manga (成人漫画 "adult manga") are used.

The common English-language meaning of this word comes from the Japanese usage of "エッチ" (H, or etchi, often spelled ecchi by non-Japanese) which is believed to be a shortened form of hentai used as a polite codeword in the 1960s (however, even in Japan its origins are not entirely clear). "H" in Japan is now broadly used to refer to all sexual content or activity, so "H manga" are manga with sexual content - however, "H" and "hentai" are no longer interchangeable.

Well known H anime titles

This section will be affectionately refered to as "Too Hot for TV!" In all honesty, the United States of America is the most conservative country in the world when it comes to our media. A typical anime in Japan, whether on the big screen, on video, or on TV, is likely to have some reference to at least one of the following: nudity, sex, homosexuality, and extreme violence.

We in the US have been raised thinking that these things are universally deemed "inapropriate." Then why is it you can be flashed on a Saturday morning on the kids channel? There are a couple cultural differences that make this possible. In Japan, nudity is not viewed as obscene. It's just a fact of Japanese life. Also, homosexuality and violence are more tolerable in Japan than they are here. Sex is still seen as inapropriate for kids, but is still widespread in most adult animes.

But these "cultural differences" simply won't do for American producers. Large portions of anime episodes including those "inapropriate" elements are often cut completely. This may be what gives anime in the US kind of a weird feel. Here are some examples.

In the 1978 "Battle of the Planets," the chief bad guy is actually not a guy, well, sort of. In the english version, Zoltar was your tipical bad guy... who just happened to have really red lips. In the Japanese version, Zoltar was in fact a male and a female merged in the womb! He could even alternate genders at any given time! Why change, you ask? Yeah, like kids in 1978 were ready for that one.

In DBZ, a huge amount of blood and gore was "digi-penned" out of loads of episodes. Cartoon Network doesn't seem to think that it's viewing audience is mature enough for a serious and realistic TV series. Plus the fact that they would get sued.

In Outlaw Star, episodes 41-43 were cut from the American version because of sex. Loads of it.
